Editors Suggestion: Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism
By Susan Jacoby

From Amazon:At a time when the separation of church and state is under attack as never before, Freethinkers offers a powerful defense of the secularist heritage that gave Americans the first government in the world founded not on the authority of religion but on the bedrock of human reason.

Through the UUSC Coffee Project we can enjoy delicious coffee, tea and chocolate while helping small-scale farmers in Latin America, Africa, Asia and the U.S. as they build a better future for themselves and their families. Through the project, farmers earn a fair price for their products, have access to affordable credit, and gain a long-term trading partner they can trust, a Fair Trade Organization called Equal Exchange. In addition, for each pound of coffee, tea or chocolate purchased by UU congregations through the project, Equal Exchange makes a contribution to UUSC programs that support the human righs and social justice work of community-based cooperatives in coffee-growing regions. 100% of Equal Exchange's coffee, tea and chocolate products are fairly traded.
Wish List for Incentive Donations for Homelessness Survey Needed by 12/18/09 from Visalia UU Fellowship members & friends: toothpaste, conditioner, combs, socks, ponchos, 1 gallon ziplock bags, first aid kits, deodorant, tissue, q-tips (or monetary donations to purchase the same items). The UUFV Social Justice Team asks that you bring donations to either the 12/6 or 12/12 worship service to be boxed and contributed in our church's name to the cause. Out of the Box
graphic
It is hard to overstate this gentleman's influence on any recent ethical theory you may have read or think you came to on your own. This is an outline of his major ideas: Philosophical Overview and a Wikipedia outline as well.
Here is a limited text of his most famous and debated book A Theory of Justice or just type "John Rawls" into your favorite search engine, you'll find plenty to read.
The reason I put this in this month is that Rawls theories are very close to UU ideals in important respects, though derived from another direction. Also you have to watch how he uses words, not always by their common meanings. Being nudged to consider what we really mean, even with the seemingly simplest words in our social vocabulary would make him very happy, I imagine.
There isn't really a such animal as a "Rawlsian" outside of accademia, yet it you want to consider yourself a liberal it's good to read from someone who has contributed greatly to the word liberal's rich meaning.
