JOURNAL WRITING AS A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE

Many of us were inspired by last month's reading of "The Wisdom of Transcendentalism" by Rev. Christine Robinson, who reminded us that the Transcendentalist authors of our  Unitarian heritage recommend to us a set of spiritual practice which we can find most valuable to us today.
These include contemplation of nature, wide reading, journal writing, and accepting conversation. Being in nature and reading are not enough;  writing down our thoughts is the best way to make valuable insights our own. Do you think of your journaling as a spiritual practice? It can be. Please check out our brand-new  "Journal Writing" section of our online bookstore! You'll find inspirational books on journaling as a spiritual exercise, along with a set up blank journals for yourself or to give as gifts. Remember your support of our bookstore helps us financially as well as helps you spiritually!

JOIN OUR NEW CHOIR
Our Fellowship has started a new choir!  Pianist Ken Elias is our new choir director, and a half-dozen regulars are coming early several Sundays a month to practice. In November, the Choir will be meeting at 4 PM for rehearsal on 11/2, 11/16, 11/23, and 11/30.
If you are interested in joining the choir, contact Ken Elias at kelias@prodigy.net or phone: (559) 561-0610.

Your Social Justice/Green Sanctuary Committee is working to provide 800 compact fluorescent bulbs for the Pixley community.  David Hodges is heading-up this project which we hope to complete in  January.

We've completed two Carbon Ring study groups. If you would like to start a third group with Monday or Tuesday nights as possible meeting times, please contact Harold to volunteer!  harold@uuvisalia.org

INTERESTED IN CARPOOLING TO CHURCH?

Our Three Rivers friends have modeled ethical and economical travel for us by carpooling to Sunday services, and Carbon Ring participants have been challenged to develop climate change action plans as individuals and as an organization. Can we sacrifice some independence and establish new habits?

Sign up to commute to Felowship Worship Services from Tulare, Hanford, or Visalia.  Look for sign up sheets at the Meeting House or e-mail info@uuvisalia.org if you're interested.

There's another election in front of us, this one for the new President of the UUA. In June of next year, our GA delegates will elect either the Reverend Laurel Hallman or the Reverend Peter Morales when they meet in Salt Lake City. And don't forget that both of these candidates will be at our District Assembly in May. Meanwhile, here's a nice summary of what they are talking about on the campaign trail:

Employee of the Universe

Buckminister Fuller (1895-1983), who was a notable Unitarian and the inventor of the geodesic dome, in his early thirties, contemplated suicide for a few hours one night at the edge of Lake Michigan. He  had suffered a series of business failure that left him feeling he had made such a mess of his life that the best move would be for him to remove himself from the scene and make things simpler for his wife and infant daughter. Apparently everything he touched had turned to dust in spite of his incredible creativity and imagination.

However, instead of ending his life, Fuller decided to live from then on as if he had died that night.

Being dead, he wouldn't have to worry about how things worked out any longer for himself personally, and would be free to devote himself to living as a representative of the universe.

The rest of his life would be a gift. Instead of living for himself, he would devote himself to asking, "What is it on this planet (which he referred to as Spaceship Earth) that needs doing that I know something about, that probably won't happen unless I take responsibility for it?" He decided he would just ask that question continuously and do what came to him, following his nose. In this way, working for humanity as an employee of the universe at large, you get to modify and contribute to your locale by who you are, how you are, and what you do. But it's no longer personal. It's just part of the totality of the universe expressing itself.

- Adapted from Wherever You Go, there You Are by Jon Kabat -Zinn
